Between Layers : Justin Stewart
The exhibition marks the first formal presentation at VSG of a new body of work Stewart has been developing over the past two years. This exploration will continue during Miami Art Week, where the gallery will present a solo booth of Stewart’s work at NADA Miami.
Between Layers explores the gap between what we first perceive and what we discover when we take the time to look more closely.
Stewart uses hundreds of layers of cut felt in contrasting colors to create sculptural forms that shift and transform as the viewer moves between distance and detail.
At first glance, the works appear manufactured, but their creation is an exceptionally human process. Each sculpture combines digital programming, machine cutting, and the meticulous manual labor of gluing hundreds of individual layers together.
As our lives become increasingly shaped by digital technology, Stewart’s work offers an interesting balance between the precision of machines and the human hand. Rather than removing the artist from the process, technology becomes another tool, with Stewart’s hand remaining deeply involved in every step of the work’s creation.
