R. Justin Stewart
Stewart's work operates through two parallel processes: one digital, the other entirely handmade. The design phase unfolds through rendering software, where each composition is meticulously developed and translated into individual layers that are precisely machine-cut. The assembly process, however, remains resolutely hands-on. Stewart meditatively constructs each work himself, gluing every felt layer without the use of assistants.
At a moment when much of the art world continues to move toward automation and technologically driven forms of production, Stewart has cultivated a practice that embraces digital tools while preserving the irreplaceable value of artist labor. His work proposes a space in which precision and touch are not opposing forces, but complementary ones—each elevating the other.
