Tempest... Solo Show by Jean Cate

Upcoming Exhibition: Jean Cate, “Tempest”

Opening February 15, 2025, at VSG Contemporary

VSG Contemporary is thrilled to present “Tempest”, a new series of 13 original works by Jean Cate. In this body of work, Cate explores the beauty & emotional resonance of nature’s most dramatic forces.

Inspired by atmospheric shifts, particularly the fleeting and powerful presence of clouds, Cate’s paintings serve as visual meditations on the cycles of mental, emotional, and environmental change.

Created with watercolor, pastel, ink, and salt on raw birch wood panels, Cate’s process allows natural elements—like water, air, and gravity—to shape the compositions organically.

“For this series, I wanted to embrace the unpredictability of natural forces,” Cate explains. “The raw wood, the interaction of pigment with water, and the gravitational pull all became collaborators in shaping this work. Together, these paintings reflect the cycles of a storm—physical, emotional, and mental.”

A Pasadena, California native, Jean Cate graduated from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2016. Her work has gained recognition in interior design projects with clients such as Marriott, Core Spaces, Dock 6, and Studio K. In addition to her artistic practice, Cate is the owner of Martha Mae Art Supplies and Beautiful Things, as well as The Center of Order and Experimentation.

This solo show will open in our middle gallery room and will be on display through March.

Join us for the opening of “Tempest” on Thursday, February 15, from 5–9 PM at VSG Contemporary.
