Maternal Offering: A Solo Show by Debora Koo
In her newest solo exhibition, Debora Koo presents a body of paintings depicting serene scenes from the home. The works trace back to a single memory: her first American birthday party after immigrating as a child. The cake, adorned in pink icing, stayed with her, and over time became a symbol of belonging and the rituals of American domestic life. She spent much of her life on the receiving end of gestures like this one, and now as she embraces the giving nature of motherhood, her work has evolved and the paintings themselves have become a kind of maternal offering. Many of the cakes depicted here are ones Koo has baked for her own children and they are often shown held in outstretched hands extending the gesture of care directly to the viewer.
Many of the compositions unfold in the artist's kitchen, where sunlight streams in through nearby windows, illuminating tables carefully arranged with food and flowers. Tulips, a recurring motif in Koo's work, carry a sense of the outdoors gently pulled inward, while patterned tablecloths and the artist's own polka dot dress create a rich texture and depth. Larger in scale than much of her earlier work, the paintings in Maternal Offering envelop the viewer with the familiar warmth of a family kitchen.
VSG is pleased to present Maternal Offering as Debora Koo's first solo exhibition with the gallery, and to welcome her as a fully represented artist.
